save the $50 and get Age of Empires II HD or buy the HD version of one of the old Stronghold games (because that's essentially what this is). I'd give it a 6 or 7 for a price tag of $15 but this game is priced in the same neighborhood along with really good new releases. I really wanted this to be a good castle sim but it isn't. Everything else is pretty much the same dated game with bland mechanics.

I don't typically care about graphics but the only thing I can point to that is different from the 2002 release from this series is a barely perceptible bump in graphics quality. You can build a big city in the sandbox game and play around a little and that's alright but then you're just putzing around collecting resources and decorating a screen. Formations and all that stuff are meaningless. instead your mob of cheap units crashes into their mob of cheap units.

The big battles you see in previews? Those don't happen. Your walls are made out of chalk and disintegrate into powder at the first sign of trouble. Break out your Sony Walkman, crank the Limp Bizkit, and grab yourself a can of Surge (which they're also re-releasing this year). It's 2002 again and if you bought this game you are the proud owner of a $50 copy of Crusaders 1. Crusader 2 defines old school real time strategy in a new 3D engine with fiendish AI characters, fast-paced skirmish gameplay and new troops, traps and castles. Players can also expect new visuals, a reworked battle interface, new AI characters, environmental threats, new units and real-time physics. Stronghold Crusader 2 is the long awaited sequel to Stronghold Crusader, a game many consider to be the definitive castle sim. As a developer their mission is to recapture the addictive, intense gameplay that made the original Crusader a classic. It is only now, having become a fully independent studio, that Firefly feel comfortable delivering a worthy sequel to their fans’ favourite game. Crusader 2 has been on the mind of Lead Designer Simon Bradbury since the release of Stronghold Crusader in 2002.

One last thing: if you're interested in multiplayer you're in luck! Both Strongholds are of the rare older game kind that still have quite a happening multiplayer scene (more so for Crusader than Stronghold) which you can find on GameRanger. You can give that a try and if you like it enough you can still come back to nab the other one from the sale until the New Year.

I really do recommend both, but if you only want to get one right this minute Stronghold should be the one. The classic version, which is also available in the HD installer, is still your best bet for that one. Whatever you do, stay away from the awful Crusader Extreme version of the second game, as it added some highly unnecessary and quite broken game mechanics to Crusader. Sometimes I just prefer to play in the traditional European medieval setting, but I must say Crusader has an incredible ambiance, which is especially due to its terrific soundtrack. Lastly, I'd recommend Stronghold over Crusader for newbies because the latter gets tough very quickly for newcomers. Crusader also introduced a skirmish mode not present in Stronghold, but it's not as important as you can actually grab a shitload of user-created levels here. In Stronghold you usually have good, wide swaths of land on which you can build farms and the like, while in Crusader you're limited to much more restricted oasis patches located on the map. Also the settings between the two change some of the gameplay. Crusader has some new units and a few (better buildings). Yes, they are quite similar, yet there are some distinct differences. Charbon: Knowing I already own Crusader, is there any reason why I should get Stronghold? Both games look extremely similar.
